Hospital Bag Checklist for Dad: What to Pack, and What to Skip

Hospital bag checklist for dad: what to pack in your own bag, what you'll need that nobody mentions, what to check in hers and what stays in the car.

Packed brown duffel bag on a wooden floor next to a white chair

She’s had her hospital bag packed since week 30, color-coded and probably laminated. Yours is a plan to “just grab some stuff”. Let’s fix that.

This hospital bag checklist for dad isn’t complicated, but your bag matters more than you think. Labor can run twenty hours, the cafeteria closes early, and a dad who’s hungry, cold and out of battery is no use to anyone.

What to pack in dad’s hospital bag: the non-negotiables

Pack it in week 36, park it by the door and stop thinking about it.

  • A change of clothes, plus something you can sleep in.
  • A sweater or hoodie. Delivery rooms run cold.
  • Toiletries and a toothbrush.
  • Any medication you take.
  • A phone charger with a long cord. Hospital outlets live behind the bed. Always.
  • Real food: dried meat, nuts, dense protein bars. When we get hungry, we become a liability.
  • A water bottle.
  • Mints or gum. After the fourth coffee, this is a kindness.
  • Cash or a card for parking and vending machines.
  • Headphones, a book or something downloaded. For the long stretches where nothing happens.

And say it out loud at the door: phone, wallet, keys, glasses.

The go bag is packed. The question is: do you know where it is?

What dad needs at the hospital that nobody tells you

The things you’ll wish you’d packed:

  • Your own pillow. If you want any chance of sleeping on that fold-out chair. The chair was clearly designed by someone with a grudge against fathers.
  • Flip-flops for the shower.
  • A washcloth or cooling towel for her forehead. Pack it dry, dampen it there. Wiping her forehead is the easiest job in the room, and somehow the one she’ll remember.
  • A list of who to text, and when. Agree with her beforehand who hears the news first, and who waits.

What to leave at home: the laptop. There will be quiet hours. This is not the moment to start a video game.

Most hospitals provide diapers, wipes, pads and mesh underwear during the stay. Ask yours at the hospital tour or on the phone, so you don’t pack a whole pharmacy.

What to pack for her that she might forget

She’ll have packed her own bag. You’re not repacking it. You’re looking through it once, so you know where everything is at 4 a.m. Things that tend to get forgotten:

  • Lip balm and hair ties. Hospitals are dry, and hair gets in the way.
  • Glasses, contact lens case and solution.
  • Her own pillow or blanket.
  • A going-home outfit that still fits a bump. Loose and high-waisted. Yes, still.
  • A going-home outfit and swaddle for the baby. Bring two sizes. You won’t know which fits until you meet them.
  • Her printed birth preferences. Two copies: one for the bag, one for the nurse at check-in. Our free birth plan template is part of the same download.

What to keep in the car for labor

Not in the bag, but your job:

  • The car seat, installed in the car, not sitting in the trunk. Most hospitals won’t let you leave without one. Here’s how to install it, by week 36.
  • A towel and a trash bag on her seat, in case her water breaks on the way.
  • A full-ish tank. Keep it at least half full from week 35.
  • The route, driven once at rush hour, plus where to park and which entrance to use at night.

Before all that, do the boring part in month eight: pre-register at the hospital online, and keep the insurance card and photo ID with the bag. Doing paperwork in the car during a contraction is not the plan.

Hospital bag checklist printable

Our free hospital bag checklist has your bag, her bag and the baby’s on one page, plus the car and paperwork list. Print it, tick it off and tape it inside the closet door.

When to pack: week 36 for everyone, earlier if her care team expects an early birth. Babies don’t check the calendar.

Once you’re there, here’s what your actual job is in the delivery room.
